ABOUT THE ISLAND OF MLJET


Mljet is an island that is most often encountered in the stories of Ulysses and St. Paul . This is above all the island of outstanding natural and cultural heritage. Two saltwater lakes, which are actually deep coves, lush forest of Aleppo pine and holm oak, shore cliffs, caves, rikavice, blatina and brine, and plant endemic species, sea and submarine world, attributes its exceptional nature. The climate is Mediterranean with hot and dry summers and mild and rainy winters, and the growth of vegetation is provided throughout the year. Some plant species are capable of growing mode during the hot summers, such as wooden spurge (Euphorbia dendroides).

The density of the island of Mljet in the Illyrian times witnessed numerous Illyrian ruins scattered hills island. From the Roman period has been preserved in the complex construction Polače (an early Christian basilica, a Roman palace, left thermos). Benedictine monastery on the islet of St. Mary's in Grand Lake from the 12th century, a group of buildings in Babino Polje from the time of the Dubrovnik Republic (the Prince's Palace, Sotnica, St. Vlaho).

In 1960 the northwestern part of the island of 3000 hectares, has been declared a national park. During the summer, guests from Korcula, Makarska, Hvar and Dubrovnik visit island of Mljet .

NATIONAL PARK "MLJET"

In the framework of implementation of the protection of natural, and cultural heritage, in 1960 the western part of the island (about 1 / 3) has been declared a national park, and to 3000 ha of land area and 100 ha of the Veliko and Malo Lakes and Solin Bay. When creating a physical plan in 1987 a marine was protected area, and in 1997 by formal decision of Parliament, extended the boundaries of national parks in the marine zone, 500 meters from the coastline of islands, headlands and islands, i.e., 2275 ha of sea space. In this area carried out systematic protection of nature to this day, trees are left to natural development, is only permitted sanitary cutting. Public Institution of National Park Mljet assures the average clearance of forest and trails and the renovation of promenades, waste management and cleaning coastlines.

Every year, visitors come here and look for pleasant and educational holiday. Therefore, in the area of the national park there are educational boards in order to acquaint them with the same values of natural and cultural heritage. Boards are placed in the following locations: The ports, Montokuc, Mali most, Veliki Gradac, Islet Saint Mary, Polače, Cross (Soline bay) and the village Goveđari.
